Soft swap, full swap and the other terms
Swinging has a vocabulary of its own, and most of it describes how far a couple goes with others:
- Soft swap: everything short of intercourse with someone outside your couple. Kissing, touching, oral, and often sex with your own partner in the same room as others.
- Full swap: intercourse with someone other than your partner.
- Same room or separate room: whether the couple plays within sight of each other or apart.
- Unicorn: a single woman who joins a couple. A single man in the same position is rarer and has no settled name, though ‘bull’ is used in some circles.
- Hotwife, or stag and vixen: a dynamic where the woman plays with others and her partner enjoys watching or hearing about it.
- Vanilla: anyone not in the lifestyle, or sex without any of this.
Swinging vs open relationship vs polyamory
Swinging is the recreational end of consensual non-monogamy. The couple is primary and the sex with others is usually shared, social and bounded: at a party, at a club, on a weekend. An open relationship loosens that: partners may have sex with others separately, on their own time, without the other being present. Polyamory goes further and allows love, not just sex, with more than one person.
The three overlap in practice, and plenty of couples move between them, but a swinger who says ‘we don’t date’ means it.
What ‘the lifestyle’ means
‘The lifestyle’ is the insider term for swinging and the social world around it: the clubs, the resorts, the house parties, the cruises, the forums. Someone ‘in the lifestyle’ is a swinger. The phrase was adopted partly to avoid the word swinger, which carries a 1970s key-party image that many couples do not recognise themselves in. The two are interchangeable in practice; this page uses both because people search for both.
How swinging works in practice
Most couples start with a conversation that lasts weeks, not minutes. The usual path is: agree on rules (soft or full swap, same room or not, protection, who can say stop), make a joint profile on a site built for couples, meet another couple socially first, and let play happen when, and only if, all four people want it.
Clubs and resorts add structure: entry is usually for couples and single women, there are rooms set aside for play, and a no-means-no culture is enforced by staff. Nobody is obliged to do anything by walking in the door.

The lifestyle runs on a few unwritten rules, and breaking them is how people get uninvited:
- No means no, the first time, with no sulking.
- Ask before touching. Watching is fine where watching is allowed; touching needs a yes.
- Your partner’s limits are your limits. The couple decides together, and either half can stop everything.
- Protection is the default unless a couple explicitly agrees otherwise.
- Discretion. What happens at a party stays there, and you never out people.
- Shower, dress for the room, and do not get drunk.
Questions people ask
Is swinging the same as cheating?
No. Cheating is sex without your partner’s knowledge or against their wishes. Swinging is sex with your partner’s agreement, usually with them present. The whole thing collapses the moment one partner is doing something the other has not agreed to.
Do swingers only play as couples?
Mostly, but not only. Single women are welcome almost everywhere in the lifestyle; single men are admitted at some clubs and parties, often in limited numbers. Some couples play only together, some play separately, and the rule is set couple by couple.
Is swinging good or bad for a relationship?
It depends on the relationship going in. Couples who swing because they are secure and curious tend to report that it strengthens them; couples who try it to fix a problem tend to make the problem worse. Research on swingers is thin, but what exists does not find lower relationship satisfaction than in monogamous couples.
How do I find swinger clubs near me?
Sites and apps built for couples list clubs and parties by city. The Coywink venues directory includes swinger clubs, lifestyle resorts and sex-positive venues, with addresses and websites where we have them. Most clubs also publish their own dress codes and entry rules.
