Manifesto

Adults deserve better.

A short essay on what we’re building, what we’re not, and why both choices are deliberate.

The incumbents lose users on the same three failures.

SDC has the lifestyle community’s structural problems — a UX from another decade, a zombie-profile problem nobody fixes, and dark-pattern billing that pushes 36-month auto-renews onto people trying to cancel. FetLife has the kink community’s structural problems — opaque moderation that hands out bans without reasons, an SMS-only auth scheme, and an admin team that built a community then walked away from maintaining it. Both lose users on the same three failures: dated UX, opaque moderation, and weak privacy and trust.

That’s the door. Fix those three things, build the door wide enough for both communities to walk through, and the platform earns its place — not by being louder than the incumbents but by being more deserving of trust.

The wedges, in writing.

Modern UX, mobile-first. A real PWA. Real typography. Real responsive design that respects thumbs. Zero dark patterns. One-tap cancel, 7-day no-questions refund, neutral billing descriptor. The plan is to look and feel like a product designed this decade, because that’s the easiest thing for the incumbents to fail at and the hardest thing to fake.

Privacy by default. DMs are private — encrypted in transit and at rest, never mined, with full end-to-end encryption (MLS) on the roadmap. Location is city-level only. Last-seen is bucketed: online, today, this week, this month, dormant. Stalker-grade data isn’t collected because it isn’t needed for the product to work. The data we don’t collect is the data that cannot leak.

Trustworthy moderation. Every action ships a Statement of Reasons citing the rule it violated. Appeals are one tap and get a fresh review. Quarterly transparency reports. No shadow-bans, no enforcement by silent reach-throttling, no rules that can’t be cited because nobody wrote them down.

“The data we don’t collect is the data that cannot leak.”

What we won’t do.

No fake profiles, ever. A platform with bots is a platform that lies to you about the size of its community. The cold-start strategy is partnering with real community organizers in real cities and earning real listings. Empty is honest; filler is theft.

No selling, no model training. We allow explicit content for adults, and it never enters a third-party data broker, ad auction, or AI training corpus. The product makes money from things you choose to pay for, like subscriptions and event tickets, not from selling your data.

No opaque enforcement, no shadow-bans. The community will be told the rules in plain language, and the platform will be told its rules in plain language. When we enforce, we cite the rule. When we’re wrong, the appeal works. When we’re still wrong, the transparency report makes the pattern public, and we answer for it.

No dark-pattern billing. One-tap cancel from the privacy screen. 7-day no-questions refund. Neutral billing descriptor on your statement. 12-month price grandfather on changes. Nothing here will ever try to keep you against your will.

What we’re asking from you.

Read the policies. Ask the hard questions. Hold us to the commitments we just wrote down. The quarterly transparency reports will say whether we kept them; the public appeals will say whether moderation works; the published roadmap will say whether we’re drifting from the wedges that made us worth trying.

And if you’re a community organizer, a press contact, or a regulator with a question we haven’t answered — write to us. The emails on every page reach a real person.

The product is the proof.

The way to test our promises is to use it. Two minutes of signup, no payments until beta, delete everything in one tap.
