What does polyamory mean?

Polyamory is the practice of having, or being open to having, more than one romantic or loving relationship at the same time, with the knowledge and consent of everyone involved. The emphasis is on relationships rather than sex: a polyamorous person may have two partners they love, each of whom knows about the other. It is one form of ethical non-monogamy, alongside open relationships and swinging, and the one most focused on love.

Also called poly, polyamorous.

Polyamory vs open relationship vs swinging

All three are consensual non-monogamy; they differ in what is shared. Swinging shares sex, usually as a couple and usually without romance. An open relationship has a primary couple who may have sex with others, with romance sometimes allowed and sometimes not. Polyamory allows love: multiple relationships that can each be serious, and that may or may not involve a primary couple at all. People move between the three, and the labels matter less than the agreements.

The shapes polyamory takes

There is no standard layout. The common ones:

  • Hierarchical: a primary partner, often one you live with, plus secondary relationships with fewer entitlements.
  • Non-hierarchical: partners are not ranked, though they may still differ in time and commitment.
  • Solo poly: multiple relationships without a primary, and without wanting to merge lives.
  • Kitchen table: everyone knows each other and could sit down to a meal together.
  • Parallel: partners know of each other but their relationships run separately.
  • Triads and quads: three or four people in one relationship together, with every pair connected.
  • Relationship anarchy: no set categories at all; each connection is defined by the people in it.

The words you will hear

A metamour is your partner’s other partner. A polycule is the whole network. A nesting partner is one you share a home with. Compersion is the warm feeling when a partner is happy with someone else, the opposite of jealousy. New relationship energy, or NRE, is the giddy first months with a new partner, which can make older partners feel invisible if nobody names it.

What makes it work

Time is the hard currency, not love; calendars matter more than feelings on most weeks. Agreements are explicit and get revisited. Jealousy is treated as information about a need rather than as proof something is wrong. And everyone is honest about what they actually want, including the people who try polyamory to keep a partner who wanted it and discover it is not for them.

Questions people ask

Is polyamory the same as polygamy?

No. Polygamy is marriage to more than one person, historically one man with several wives, and it is illegal in most countries. Polyamory is multiple loving relationships, married or not, with everyone consenting, and it is legal everywhere because it is simply dating.

Can polyamorous people be married?

Yes. Many polyamorous people are married to one partner and have other relationships alongside, with the spouse’s full knowledge. Marriage is a legal status; polyamory is a relationship practice. They coexist.

What is a metamour?

Your partner’s other partner, with whom you are not yourself romantically involved. Metamours might be close friends, polite acquaintances, or people who have never met, depending on whether the polycule runs kitchen-table or parallel.

Is polyamory cheating?

No. Cheating is a relationship outside the one you have without your partner knowing. Polyamory is multiple relationships with everyone knowing and agreeing. Take away the agreement and it stops being polyamory.
