What does cuckold mean?

A cuckold, in the kink sense, is a man who is aroused by his partner having sex with other men while he is excluded, teased or demeaned, all of it agreed in advance. The old meaning was an insult for a husband whose wife cheated; the modern one is a consensual dynamic built around that feeling, with the humiliation as the point. The female version is a cuckquean. Cuckolding sits between hotwifing and power exchange.

Also called cuck, cuckolding.

Cuckold vs hotwife

The same shape, a woman with other men and her partner approving, with the feeling turned inside out. A hotwife’s husband is proud and turned on; a cuckold is turned on by being made less: denied, compared, told about it afterwards, or made to watch. Couples move between the two, and many use elements of both. The question to ask is simply whether the man wants to feel celebrated or wants to feel humbled.

Why it works for some people

Part of it is the ordinary thrill of a partner being desired by others, which hotwifing shares. Part of it is a submissive streak: being denied and teased is a form of power exchange, and the wife, or the other man, is the one in charge. Part of it is compersion, pleasure in the partner’s pleasure. The humiliation is usually ring-fenced to the scene; outside it the couple are equals, and most cuckold couples describe themselves as very close.

How couples set it up

Slowly, and with more talking than sex at first. Common steps: a fantasy told in bed, then told in detail, then a profile, then a first meeting with the other man in public, with clear rules about protection, what the cuckold sees or hears, and what words are and are not used. The other man, often called a bull, should know he is part of a couple’s dynamic and respect its limits; a bull who tries to take the wife out of it has misread the room.

The words

Cuckolding has a vocabulary of its own:

  • Cuckquean: a woman in the cuckold role, aroused by her partner being with other women.
  • Bull: the man the wife has sex with.
  • Cuckoldress or hotwife: the woman, depending on whether the dynamic leans humiliation or pride.
  • Denial: the cuckold going without, by agreement, as part of the dynamic.
  • Reclaiming: sex between the couple after she has been with someone else.

Questions people ask

Is cuckolding the same as cheating?

No. Cheating is sex outside a relationship without the partner’s knowledge or consent. Cuckolding is sex outside it with the partner’s knowledge, consent and arousal, usually planned together. The old word for the betrayed husband was borrowed for a dynamic that is the opposite of betrayal.

What is a cuckquean?

A woman who is aroused by her partner having sex with other women while she is excluded or teased, by agreement. The same dynamic as cuckolding with the roles reversed, and less talked about only because it is less common.

What is a bull in cuckolding?

The man who has sex with the cuckold’s partner. He is a participant in the couple’s dynamic, not a rival to it, and the good ones know the difference.

Is cuckolding a sign of a problem in the relationship?

Not in itself. It is a consensual fantasy that some couples enjoy, and the couples who practise it tend to talk more, not less. It becomes a problem when one partner wants it and the other goes along to keep the peace, which is true of any kink.
